Prelude – Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella (sung by our very own choir director, Mary Vogt)

Bring a torch, Jeannette, Isabella, Bring a torch, to the cradle run!

It is Jesus, good folk of the village; Christ is born and Mary’s calling:

Ah! Ah! Beautiful is the Mother, Ah! Ah! Beautiful is Her Son!

It is wrong when the Child is sleeping, It is wrong to talk so loud;

Silence, all, as you gather around, Lest your noise should waken Jesus:

Hush! Hush! See how fast He slumbers; Hush! Hush! See how fast He sleeps!

Softly to the little stable, Softly for a moment come;

Look and see how charming is Jesus, How He is white, His cheeks are rosy!

Hush! Hush! See how the Child is sleeping; Hush! Hush! See how He smiles in dreams.

Call to Worship (Responsively):

Every longing soul, take heart: Something is about to happen.

All earth is waiting in joyful anticipation and glad hope!

Lift up your heads, O people, God is drawing near; the world is about to turn!

The lowly will be lifted up and the outcast will be gathered in!

Prepare the way, O people, for a new light shines in the darkness.

Renew in us a vision of your way, O God – your way of peace and love, justice, mercy, and

As Advent people, we work and wait and live for the vision of heaven’s way on earth.

Come, Morning Star, Light Divine, dwell among us, and fill our hearts with expectant hope!

Hymn: Lift Up Your Heads, O Mighty Gates (vss. 1-3) #129

Lift up your heads, O mighty gates; behold the glorious ruler waits!

The Sovereign One is drawing near; the Savior of the world is here.

Fling wide the portals of your heart; make it a temple, set apart

from earthly use for heaven’s employ, adorned with prayer and love and joy.

So come, our Sovereign, enter in! Let new and nobler life begin;

your Holy Spirit guide us on, until the glorious crown be won.

Prayer of Confession (Unison):

God of every waiting heart, on this first Sunday of Advent, when we begin again the process of preparing our hearts and our lives to receive your reconciling presence among us, we want to come clean about our tendency to blame others for our thoughtlessness, to blame the circumstances for our carelessness, and to blame you for our faults. Grant us the courage to take an honest look at ourselves this Advent so that we might acknowledge what needs to change within our own hearts and what needs to be reformed within our collective life. Be gentle with us as we come to terms with our need for change, and then reshape us by your gracious hand so that our lives might be fuller reflections of your love for all the world. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Response: Advent Doxology tune: OLD HUNDRETH

To God, all glorious heavenly Light,

to Christ revealed in earthly night,

to God the Spirit now we raise

our joyful songs of thankful praise. Amen.

Lighting of the Advent Candle

Response: One Candle Is Lit (vs.1) #128

Come surely, Lord Jesus, as dawn follows night,

our hearts long to greet you as roses the light.

Salvation, draw near us, our vision engage.

One candle is lit for the hope of the age.

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 64:1-9

Pastoral Prayer & Our Lord’s Prayer

Hymn: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (vss. 1-3) #119

O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel,

that mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appear.

 Rejoice, rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee O Israel!

O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here;

disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s deep shadows put to flight.

Rejoice, rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee O Israel!

O come, Desire of nations, bind all people in one heart and mind;

bid envy, strive, and quarrels cease; fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.

Rejoice, rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee O Israel!
